Purity Test

Beta version is here.

Part of my job is developing link bait… particularly link bait that can actually be pretty useful. In this case, if you know your guild pulls all nighters when necessary for a raid, and you cuss like drunken dockworkers at a prison reunion picnic? You might want to recruit members that already share your sensibilities. On the other hand, if you wouldn’t dream of belching into your microphone and you play with your four year old beside you, you might prefer a guild that isn’t so much into dropping the f-bomb.

I’d appreciate comments on the quiz, as it is in beta. A friend of mine said the question about one’s naked lover appearing before a raid was over needed an option regarding autofollow. Also, the results seem to skew everyone into one particular results category, and I need more people to take the damn thing before I can figure out if I did the math wrong, the questions wrong, or if the entire internet really is here for the swear words and porn. Wait…

Also, if you’re a die hard FPS or RTS player, I’m working on alpha versions of quizzes for you. I know more about MMOs, obviously, so if you could post your thoughts on what you look for when you’re looking for other people to play with, I’d be grateful.

I’m wondering why the option to solicit your partner for oral when they show up during a raid wasn’t an option to Q8… am I the only one this occurred to?

Hrm, need a “sometimes” for the pants question. Sometimes it’s pajamas or a skirt or a kilt.

My partner is my wife and we’re both big time MMO gamers, so quite a few of those questions get tweaked by that. Also, our guild is made up of our personal friends, so we’re very adult-oriented and our language makes sailors blush.

Either I live a very sheltered life, or you need a few more “I don’t know, I’m apparently clueless” options.

For example: Clerks, Pulp Fiction, and American Pie… I’ve never watched any of them, so beyond general impressions about what those movies are about, I don’t know off-hand whether quoting from them would be outside my boundaries or not…

Some wording changes on a few questions for those of us currently “sans mate” would be nice, too. I noticed it was covered in one question, but not in a couple others. I answered such questions as if I had one at present.

I ended up “Colorful-Disciplined” for comparison’s sake. Sounded like an “average-average” result to me based on descriptions, and actually fit me fairly well. Hope that helps…

i think there should be at least one question about trade skill priorities – ranging from a detailed plan for which guildie learns which skills and how fast they must progress to “ooh, look! an herb.” one of my friends just pointed out that i would not be considered disciplined if the quiz included such questions.

  5. Brandon said,

Colorful-Disciplined here, too. Based on the descriptions provided, that’s pretty accurate.

Colorful-Disciplined was what I got, and it does seem about accurate. I’d say I am probably more tolerant/happy with more innuendo/adult talk than the description implies though. Maybe too much weight being put on the ‘gay’ example and the sexual gesture towards the stranger? I think of those as harassing and unacceptable, but would not object to very adult discussions in guild talk much of the time.

This quiz is right up my alley! Hilarious and thought provoking πŸ˜‰

My only problem was wanting to answer the funny, witty answers…especially when there didn’t seem to be an answer that fit me…

    Colorful-Disciplined πŸ˜‰

I think some questions need more answers personally, but it is your quiz ;P

I could totally see a great deal of people not being able to make hide nor hair out of half the questions or answers really, depending on their cultural exposure to the various forms of media…but there is also the fact that fewer people who find the quiz and take it would be of those people…

For helping RTS fans find folks to play with, you might include questions similar to these:

    What’s your usual strategy?
    1) Blitz – Forget defense. Hunt down the enemy and attack as soon as possible.
    2) Outpost – Secure rudimentary fortifications from which you can launch continuous assault waves.
    3) Turtle – Fortify your base to be invincible, then slowly build up a massive army to overwhelm the enemy.
    4) Backup – Rely on an ally, supporting him however is needed.

How much war can you swallow at a time?
    1) Skirmishes only, one to five per day/night.
    2) Skirmishes only, but all day/night long.
    3) Campaigns, one or a few rounds at a time.
    4) Campaigns, until they’re done.

Honestly, I haven’t played many RTS games in multiplayer, so I’m not sure what multiplayer features are common in the genre right now. But the one I play and love, Battle for Middle Earth 2, is divided into ranked matches, skirmishes, and campaigns (similar to the boardgame Risk, except you actually fight the battles).

In any RTS, most players fall into one of those first three playstyles, while the fourth is a playstyle that’s only available in co-op multiplayer (I have no idea how common co-op is in the genre).

I agree: the pants question needs an “optional”. To pick either yes or no implies it is an intentional choice rather than an artifact of one’s state prior to reaching the computer.

It labeled me as ‘risque-intense’, which is pretty accurate (and my husband agrees). Risque=’mostly uncensored’, which is fine by me. I prefer to play with mature people (though I don’t feel that age necessarily equals maturity). I don’t curse all that much, and I don’t particularly care to see (or hear) vast quantities of foul language, but I also don’t like to have to carefully censor everything I say. Naughty jokes, risque chat and some cursing are fine. Explicit X-rated stuff is overboard. As far as ‘intense’ goes… yeah, pretty much. I’m house-bound so I have a lot of hours to play. I like plenty of laid-back time, but when raiding is going on… even if we’re still joking around while doing it, it’s raiding, and everyone better be paying attention. When raiding’s not going on, the intensity level can (and probably should) drop.

About the questions: I’ve never seen Clerks or Pulp Fiction (I know, I know…) but I’ve heard them quoted enough to answer that one appropriately, I think. Some questions were hard to answer because multiple answers could have fit. I chose what I felt was the best answer in these situations.

Nice quiz, and both my husband and I really like the possibilities it has.

(P.S.: First time poster here, but I’ve been kinda following your blogging since The Rant was posted on the EMarr forums years ago, and I as a Guide at the time went ‘HELL YES.’ So.. Hiya!)

A couple of the yes/no questions at the end could probably do a ‘Β―\(Β°_o)/Β―’ option as well.

Colorful-Disciplined here, and probably pretty accurate for me πŸ™‚

There was no appropriate answer for some of the questions, if one doesn’t raid, nor belong to a raiding guild. I had to instead answer from the point of view of guild groups, which doesn’t always work. I also would have liked to see something re. crafting or merchant-oriented.

    Guild Personality Test Colorful-Disciplined (Clean-Raunchy: 37, Relaxed-Hardcore: 46) was my results.

    I primarily join family-style guilds; I’m hard-core casual, 42, female, and married to a gamer I met in-game.

If your partner walked into the room buck naked, and you were near the end of a major dungeon crawl, what would you do?
Brief afk for a quick fondle, explaining to the group about a naked SO in the room.

After a somewhat disastrous train, you shout in an open channel, β€œOH SHIT, SORRY EVERYONE.” You get a nasty tell from someone whose first grader is playing beside them. You respond:
Warn people, idiot. I’m not omnicient.

Have you ever propositioned a game company representative?
I’m not sure if Guides from EQ1 count….

Would you play an β€œadult” MMO (heavy sex/violence/gore)?
    I’d try it, no guarantees.

Also the one about mate’s playing with you in the MMO…
Mine plays at the same time, but he usually shoots right by me in level, so while we’re playing at the same time.. it’s not necessarily together.

    Risque-Intense here.
I think I scored intense because I take everything too seriously though…

I took the quiz (and agree with the others that there were quite a few instances where I just didn’t have an answer) and the site is hung at question 40/40 so I’m not getting a result. I’ve tried it twice now and it just never loads the next page.

  17. October 2, 2007 at 1:24 pm

I’m about to take the quiz. Note that there is a grammar error on the GuildCafe front page. I was going to email it to you but comments work!

“GuildCafe is free service where you can form guilds and clans, publish your gaming accomplishments and connect with other players who like the things you do.”

There is a missing word here that makes me read this in Russian: “GuildCafe is free service…”

I agree that the question regarding wearing pants could use another option. Being female, I don’t always wear pants and there is nothing out of the ordinary about it.

On Q8 – I have actually just hit the power button on the computer to go “LD” (actually both my husband and myself as we game together). To hell with the raid, some things are more important.

I apprecate the flavor of your quiz, but judging from the questions I think perhaps that flavor is going to skew people to the same answers. For most questions, I did not find enough difference in the answers to greatly impact my choice. I.e. I found no answer that was a compelling yes for me, or I found multiple answers that would apply. Several questions were redundant, which is fine *if* you are trying to catch someone lying on the quiz.

Perhaps if you start with a very dry version of the quiz, getting the subject matter and the answers acting the way you want, and then going back and injecting the fun, you’ll have a more scientific, yet still amusing result.

I’m sure you’re aware of the work of Nick Yee. He has volumes of information that I think could be very valuable in tuning this quiz.

If the goal is to have some sort of empirical value, you might want to de-silly some of the responses a bit. If it’s just for fun, then all that works fine, as it’s an enjoyable read.

Some of the references and slang may resonate more clearly with Americans than citizens of other countries. Again, whether you’d think about changing that depends on the overall goal of the survey.

Risque – Intense, but theres no axis for “havent got the time.” Or maybe its “I dont play after 10pm CST, and most raids start AFTER then, so Id like to raid in a nice, disciplined way. I just lack opportunity”.

For picking a guild, getting play times synched seems like an important enough consideration to warrant a question or two.

And yes, Ive hit on a game rep at a convention. But she was hot, and she spent 30 minutes discussing good places to get a drink around town, so I thought I was safe. I still know it was creepy though, I just figured I had a valid opening there…

A couple of things; my answers and my girlfriend’s answers both came out to Colorful Disciplined, and I think that signals a tendency for this quiz to assume all guilds raid, which isn’t really the case in my situation. Although our guild will raid on occasion, its pretty much an activity forced on us simply due to a lack of alternate content on the particular game we play, rather than us being a ‘raiding’ guild. Hence, we’re ‘Disciplined’ simply because we’re adults, for the most part, but not because we’re uber. Far from it, left to our own devices in our own idillic MMO, we’d be in small groups mucking about on pointless endeavors.

Also, there’s one question that’s can have misleading answers; the ‘have you slept with a guildmate’ sort of implies that you’ve met them through the game or guild, rather, than, say, sleeping with your RL girlfriend that also happens to play the same MMO and is in the same guild as you. The latter situation is hardly as spicy or as interesting as I think an answer in the afirmative would suggest.

  25. Solvoug said,

Good quiz — nice read πŸ™‚ I had the same general comments as some above; I don’t raid much because my guild is small and we are fairly casual. RL friends that I have known for many many years so many of the questions didn’t apply as much.

I think, though, there needs to be a question about d00d $p3@k. Some people are fine with it — for me, when I see someone type out “d00d UR ghey” I know they won’t be joining our guild πŸ™‚

  26. Skeetarian said,

    October 3, 2007 at 4:15 pm

I concur with Solvoug about the 1337 crap

I’d also like to see something about how they feel about PvP/RvR. Are you the type to track down someone that killed you, added onto ‘your fight’, ‘red is dead’, etc.

This sort of thing would be helpful when looking for like minded guilds to propose alliances also…and it would be a tremendous help to know if a similar Colorful-Seasoned guild would not be as compatible because your ‘zerger’ guild might hit their ‘8man’ fight and they’ll pull off the fight to let your group die to an ‘enemy’

Do they play the game on the box, or do they play by their own sub-ruleset?

For your site, I would find that a particularly enticing reason to consider moving from GP.

    6. To me the quote seemed potentially construed as more actively homophobic than an offhand “Dude, this hat is gay.” Maybe that’s my damage or your intent.

The quiz was kind of OK, but it seemed to have a serious lack of neutral options (or the neutral options strike the wrong note).

Take 18 (cybering). What does someone who doesn’t cyber, but doesn’t particularly care if other people do it answer? (My answer: “I time the delay between an accidental send to /gu and the sender logging out”)

It also seems to be too centred on the raid/casual duality, and leaves out crafters and roleplayers, who may be on as many hours, and as focused on what they do as the raiders, but have a whole different perspective on SO’s and cats.

Speaking of which … the cat question really needs a “Catapault” answer πŸ˜‰

Personally there were plenty of times where I wished that I could done e) None of the Above or just skipped the question. Also… most of the guilds/clans/groups that I have belonged to have all been locals and friends (and thus very casual and small). Some the questions appeared to be targeted to those that participate or lead more focused guilds, which none of the responses represented me.

Anyways just my thoughts. Good quiz though.

Not bad. The answers aren’t spot on, but it’s pretty easy to read the intention from most of them. Unfortunately it came up with ‘colorful’ : “Colorful indicates players and guilds who prefer an environment where *excessive* strong language and discussion of adult subjects are discouraged, but the occasional double entendre or ribald reference is still appreciated.”

To be more accurate, I don’t really care about language or most subjects as long as it’s entertaining. It would be interesting to get some feedback from guilds or groups of players that are matched up using this system.

You might want to add : “You’re playing a female character with ample chest equipment and acceptable breast physics. How often do you jump?” If I could get a list of people that say “I never stop jumping” to avoid being anywhere near them I’d be eternally grateful!

  38. Tovin said,

    October 6, 2007 at 3:06 pm

I’m Risque Intense! So totally NOT me!

Risque indicates players and guilds who prefer a mostly uncensored environment. – My GUILD can be uncensored cause I know they’re not going to do anything overly inappropriate to outsiders, and mostly I play in RL friends guilds. So if one of us does something horribly bad, someone will knock on your door in 20 minutes and sit you down and explain it! The outside MMO world has been DESIGNED to allow players to not get along and still thrive. So there’s few people who are kind for the sake of advancement. This is stupid. People are not good to each other, and in a community environment where not forced to cooperate, will screw each other over with abandon.

Intense players and guilds are organized, and expect a high level of attention to what’s happening in the game. – My guilds are always casual, hardly raid, and again, RL friends. So our level of attention is calling each other and making sure they didn’t fall asleep or get enticed away for nookie (more often the case) when heals or tanks fail to operate! A few group wipes and we’re off to doing something else. Raids are never a possibility because of kids, jobs, time in game restrictions, but mostly, they’re just not fun.

    For the questions:
The pants options needs to either specify naked down there, or shorts. Or give you an idea of what you’re answering a little better.

The movie to quote from question I don’t get. I’ve only seen American Pie, (and my husband made me watch Clerks!) and only once, so I wouldn’t get a quote from any of ’em.

I don’t get the name your kid after a porn start question either. What does porn have to do with gaming? I would totally name my kid after an NPC though!

Apparently I’m also a bit of a prude. The played while drunk or high question….drunk yes, never been high and I don’t want to be lumped into that catagory, OR play with my friends while they are in such a state.

But as always, I love your writing Sanya!

Heh, my guild ended up running through this without knowing that it was from you. Almost all of my guild came up as Colorful-Diciplined, which is not really a shock, and a few came up as Risque-Intense, which made sense for the people in that category. However, the math does seem broken in as that it didn’t seem to be possible to get “Risque-Diciplined” or “Colorful-Intese”, both of which I think would have fit some of our players. We had some people go back and try and get a hybrid result and could not. The questions that seemed to only talk about the feel of the guild didn’t seem to toggle. I don’t think that it always follows that if you’re a hard-core raider that you’ll want “Risque” conversation – we have plenty of players who are counter examples. You can read the full conversation here:

On a personal level, as a guild leader, I was wondering what all the possible outcomes were. How many possible metrics were there for the culture and for the playstyle. I was disapointed that there wasn’t an explanation of all the possible results and/or the methadology. I am reminded of the Meyers-Briggs personality typing and I found it illuminating to read about other personality type.

While I know it wasn’t really intended to be used seriously, I found the possible “jokey” responses to be really ambigious. What does it mean to say that you “Grab your wizard cap and robes”? Does that mean you’re really into the game or a LARPer?

  42. MouseJunior said,

    October 9, 2007 at 12:24 pm

    SaintPeter –

“Wizard hat and robes” is a reference to an infamous /gu vs /g mistell. As usual, google has the dirt.

But you’ve got a good point. Scrolling back through the responses here, everyone who posted their result is either Colorful/Disciplined or Risque/Intense (with one Colorful/Mellow exception). Of course, that could be skew from the general demographic likely to hang out on blogs written by people in the gaming community, but it seems odd that there aren’t any other combinations.

Cute quiz for fun. I wouldn’t put a great deal of merit behind it as a serious study or “guild finder,” though. As many have stated, there are several questions that are going for a laugh, have no “middle” answer or do not point towards any particular guild/play style attribute. I’m colorful-disciplined like the majority here.

You’re the more experienced at dealing with people and groups than I, but I’d suggest you start with a grid of the two axes you’re measuring: content rating, discipline rating. The result seems to suggest that is there, but many of the questions do not allow for plotting along those axes. Provide scenarios with the polar responses:
“A guild mate tells a pornographic joke during a boss fight. Do you…”
    A) Laugh so hard you lose focus and die (risque/freestyle)
    B) Chuckle and keep fighting (colorful/discipline)
    C) Stop fighting to report the member to an officer(stern/unfocused)
    D) Leave the raid (conservative/low priority)

Poor example, but you get the point.

As for the naked SO coming in during the raid, you forgot the *obvious* answer: remove your pants and continue the raid with him/her in your lap. πŸ™‚
